Artist Statement
In my pieces I use organic, primal images and forms taken from nature to spark the imagination and
draw on shared subconscious memories. Traditional and non-traditional materials and objects are
combined in ways to challenge the viewer's perception of space and time. I try to create a feeling of
dynamic, kinetic energy by manipulating the sense of balance in a piece. The juxtaposition of stability
and a sense of movement are important factors in my pieces.
My original formal training was as a potter so I am inclined to work in series. I typically work on several
pieces at the same time. They all have similar characteristics but have unique identities nonetheless.
Although there may not be material similarities between the series, they are linked by recurring themes
My significant early influences come from James Surls, Max Ernst, Robert Rauschenberg, Peter Volkos
and Ron Boling. I would call my work Abstract Expressionist if I had to pick a style.
Throughout history, Art has provided an unpredictable source of imagination for the human psyche. It
has the potential to change one's thoughts and open one's mind to new ideas. I hope that you take away
a bit of magic that will challenge your perception of reality in some way.
